Design:

On the hand, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim seems substantially bigger than the S21 Ultra even though both feature a 6.8-inch sized screen. The reason for it is the larger aspect ratio of the newer phone, which it gets from the Galaxy Note series, while the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G seems slimmer and easier to carry in one hand due to that.

Both are fairly hefty at little more than 8 ounces, so carrying them in a pocket is not very pleasant, but more so for the S23 Ultra which has sharp edges, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Ultra has rounder corners for extra comfort.

The structure is a glass and metal sandwich on both phones, they both employ aluminum frames, with the only major difference being that the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim goes with the current Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass which is more resistant to drops versus the older Victus first-gen on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G.

But let’s not overlook the largest distinction between these two: the S Pen! Yes, the S23 Ultra has got one within it, and the S21 Ultra just supports an S Pen, but you need to have a special case to bring it about with you, which is simply not as easy. So for those who desire the S Pen, the S23 Ultra is simply more suited.

Display:

The new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim becomes brighter and is more pleasant for usage outside, although it’s not a major improvement since the S21 Ultra already could get fairly bright too. Color accuracy has better, but the one thing I love the most is that the S23 Ultra screen can go darker, so it’s much easier on the eyes at night.

Both offer dynamic refresh rates that can go up to 120Hz for buttery smooth scrolling, but the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim can dip down to 1Hz versus the 10Hz minimum on the S21 Ultra, so it may suck less battery in these modes.

I did not observe any substantial difference in biometrics: both employ an ultrasonic type fingerprint sensor embedded into the screen, and it’s pretty quick and accurate on both of them. You can also use the front camera for face identification but bear in mind that it’s not all that secure to use a 2D picture that can be faked and it will cause your screen to become unusually bright when you use the face ID function at night, which may be unpleasant.

Performance:

With the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim, Samsung officially waves goodbye to its Exynos CPUs that it used in Galaxy models sold outside the United States, and this is good riddance.

But even if you compare the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim to the Snapdragon-powered version of the S21 Ultra (called the U.S. variant), you will see some considerable boosts in processing performance. Put simply, this is the largest generational increase in performance power in years!

I have also enjoyed that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim includes 256GB of storage on even the cheapest model, which is twice what you get on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. Having additional capacity may not seem significant when you initially obtain the phone, but after a year or two of use, many individuals discover they need more storage. Both the S23 Ultra and S21 Ultra do NOT feature a microSD card slot for expandable capacity, so bear that in mind.

For the first time, with One UI 5.1 and Android 13 on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Dual Sim, we finally also see the software catch up with the hardware. One of the great benefits of the Ultra series is zooming, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G was the first to debut a 10X zoom periscope camera for Samsung, and still to this day detail of it looks fantastic. And at 30X and 100X zoom again the largest shift has to be simply about the more realistic colors out of the S23 Ultra.

While the Galaxy S21 Ultra would easily carry us through a full day of usage, the S23 Ultra goes above and above and adds half a day on top of that.
