On the Xbox Series X|S, you can play some of the best turn-based RPGs.
When the Xbox One first came out, it didn’t have many games because it couldn’t play games from older systems. So, you could only play games that were made for the console itself. In that way, the Xbox Series X|S is better because you can play any Xbox One game on it.
So, when the console first came out, it had a pretty good selection of games. Since then, the list has been added to over and over again. No matter what you like to play, you now have great options. For example, the following games will keep you busy if you like turn-based RPGs.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Most of the games in the Yakuza series are action-adventure beat ’em ups, so the series hasn’t always been known for turn-based RPG combat. Like a Dragon is a big change for the long-running series because of this.
Still, the turn-based fights have a very Yakuza feel to them. This is because, even though fighters take turns, battles are still fast-paced and weapons can be silly. The story is also different because Kiryu, who was always the main character, is no longer there. Instead, a man named Ichiban gets together with a few friends and tries to get revenge for being locked up wrongly.
Undertale
Undertale is known for being a very unique game that doesn’t follow the usual rules of video games. This is true for almost every part of the game, including the combat, which is done one turn at a time. Most of the time, there are no parties or teams. So, most battles are between two people.
During enemy attacks, the game turns into something like “bullet hell,” where you have to control a small heart and avoid everything that is coming at you. Then, when you go on the attack, you have to pass a mini-game. You don’t have to attack, though. You can go on a peaceful run and try not to kill any of the creatures you meet.
Wasteland 3
Some of the best isometric RPGs made in recent years have come from the Wasteland series. In Wasteland 3, your group goes to a frozen Colorado after the end of the world. There, you fight a lot of battles where you take turns.
These fights aren’t like the ones you’d see in a typical RPG where you take turns. This is because you don’t have any witchcraft or magical powers to use. You have more traditional weapons like guns, but you can also use things in the environment to do damage. Also, you need to use the different things you find to keep yourself safe.
Marvel Midnight Suns
Before Marvel Midnight Suns came out, it wasn’t clear if the turn-based combat that Firaxis Games is known for could work in a superhero setting. It definitely does, because MMS is a great RPG about a new hero who teams up with Marvel comic book characters to stop their powerful mother, Lilith.
When it comes to fighting, the game is like the XCOM games in some ways. But the creators changed the formula to make it more fun for superheroes. For example, your enemies usually outnumber you by a lot, but that’s okay because your superheroes can kill a lot of enemies quickly. On top of that, there is a card-playing system that lets you use your attacks and skills. It gives the game more strategy than most comic book games.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
There have been a lot of games based on TV shows and movies over the years. Most of them aren’t very good, but Ubisoft’s recent South Park RPGs are an exception. The Fractured But Whole is a game that is surprising in how well-made it is.
Since the title is based on South Park, it’s no surprise that it’s full of the kind of crude and controversial humor that made South Park so popular. Yet, the game manages to have both funny parts and well-thought-out turn-based battles. So, many of your powers are silly, especially since they’re based on the made-up powers of different South Park characters. But they’re fun to use and have a lot of power.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Co-op play is something you don’t usually get in turn-based RPGs. Divinity: Original Sin 2, on the other hand, lets your friends join you on your adventure both in person and online. The adventure in question is full of fantasy and is about dark creatures coming to the bright world of Rivellon to take over. You have to stop these bad guys, mostly by making choices and fighting in turns.
Most of the time, these fights are about using the environment, the elements, and your own powers to win. If you have a co-op partner, each of you will control a different member of the party. This adds a new element to the game, since strategy and teamwork are important when fighting tougher enemies.
Persona 5 Royal
In the world of this popular JRPG, the main characters, who are called the Phantom Thieves, can enter a supernatural realm. Once inside, they can walk around palaces that were made out of people’s deepest desires. From there, they can get a good idea of what people want to do wrong. They do this to get adults who don’t have good morals to change their ways. As you move through these palaces, you fight different psyches that have taken on a physical form.
It sounds hard, but when you play Slope Game, it all makes sense. And it’s easy to understand how to fight because the game is based on turn-based gameplay at its core. You take control of each member of your party in order and send them out to attack your enemies, trying to find their weak spots. There are also a few other things about combat that make the game feel different.
